Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide care and handling for animals, some of whom may have behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness and aggression.
  • Provide care for animals that can have a variety of medical issues, including zoonotic diseases and skin issues such as ringworm or sarcoptic mange.
  • Feed dogs: Prepare and serve food according to guidelines (special diets closely followed), reporting observations and suggesting changes to management and Health Care personnel.
  • Water dogs: Maintain that all dogs have water at all times and bowls are sanitized.
  • Medicate dogs: Communicate medical issues to team members and assure that all dogs receive daily medications and treatments as prescribed/recommended by Health Care leaders.
  • Walk and rotate dogs: Walk dogs outside and take to dog yards on schedule, pairing them up with buddies at all times unless the dog is dog-aggressive.
  • Transport dogs: Take dogs to and from vet appointments and pick-ups by local transports.
  • Light-grooming/observe dogs, and report grooming needs to team management and volunteer groomers.
  • Provide socializing and enrichment for dogs and puppies.
  • Identify behavioral issues and share observations in writing with team members.
  • Assist in creating training plans for specific dogs, including use of Head harnesses and positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Maintain records on dogs in their file and the need for special diets, parasite controls, ailments, training performed, progress made, etc.
  • Participate in dog introductions with people and other animals.
  • Must be able to use consistent, reward-based training methodology and to correct behaviors without being abusive.
  • Clean work areas and preserve physical appearance and sanitation of dog areas, including yards, dog park, kennels, pens, carriers, Isolation areas, meet-and-greet areas and grounds. This includes poop-scooping, raking, sweeping, weeding, shoveling, dusting, mopping, hosing, scrubbing, sanitizing, trash removal, etc.
  • Serve as Ambassador of the Milo brand for all volunteers and visitors, promoting the Milo Foundation mission including the "special-ness" that is our Sanctuary in Mendocino County, where you will be encouraged to visit and do work exchange with staff members there.
  • Interact with clients: Greet them, speak and inform accurately about specific animals, and answer general questions.
  • Work and interact with interns and other staff in a cooperative and open manner. Work as a productive team member, assist other team members, communicate clearly.
  • Oversee work done by volunteer groups: Ensure safe interactions between participants and animals, assist in setting up the group with projects as needed, and answer questions.
  • Responsible for safety of volunteers and assisting in their training: Orienting them to assigned animal area, directing and encouraging their work, answering questions, and assisting with their needs.
  • Fill out maintenance request for any repairs needed and report to management.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience working with and handling animals.
  • Strong desire to work closely with dogs and comfort handling dogs with behavioral issues which may include shyness, fearfulness and aggression.
  • Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and qualify for Milo's auto insurance coverage.
  • Willing to work on weekends/holidays/varying shift times.
  • Able and willing to professionally advocate Milo Foundation position on issues, including spay/neuter.
  • Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the general public. Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred.
  • Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive and professional work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others.
  • Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, with strong listening skills to collect necessary information.
  • Basic computer skills with e-mails and Microsoft Word and ability to receive and send texts by cell phone required.
  • Experience with or ability to learn Google Calendar, Dropbox, Shelterluv, social media posting and our proprietary database and systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with various temperatures.
  • Must be able to work with physically strong dogs.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel, and lift.

Wage will be commensurate with experience and skills. Starting rate: $15/hr.

The Milo Foundation is seeking a kennel attendant. Animal experience, specifically with dogs, is required. This is an entry level position which requires significant physical exertion, ability to lift at least 50 pounds, handling large dogs, bending and kneeling. Tasks include cleaning of kennels and crates, general cleaning and maintenance of the facility, doing laundry and dishes, maintaining dog yards, and walking dogs of all sizes.

The position includes early morning shifts and potentially some evenings until approximately 8pm.  It may be part-time approximately 20-25 hours per week, to full time 35 hours per week, depending on the candidate.
